SIBU: Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bertam View Sdn Bhd (DronesKaki Sarawak) to establish collaboration in research and development (R&D) of drone technology, particularly in the cleaning aspect.
The MoU signing ceremony took place at the UTS Academic Resource Centre here, today, witnessed by UTS Vice-Chancellor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abd Hamid and Bertam View Managing Director Alvin Chai.
Khairuddin said the collaboration is in line with UTS's commitment to strengthening the fields of technology, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
"Our goal is to equip students with technical skills that are in line with Sarawak's vision for digital and industrial transformation.
"This collaboration is not just about education, but also about leading in research and technological innovation," he said.
According to Khairuddin, UTS is not a newcomer to the field of drone technology, but has been leading research in the field for over 10 years through the university's Drone Research and Applications Centre.
He said that, in the initial stages, the centre was established to provide exposure to students on the latest drone technology as well as conduct applied research, especially in the agricultural sector.
"We are working closely with partners in Taiwan, and our research team led by Dr Alan is also leading innovation in drone traffic management systems," he said.
According to him, continuous efforts in this field ensure that UTS students are exposed to the latest technology so that they are better prepared to face the world of work.
He stressed that UTS's goals are in line with Sarawak's vision for digital and industrial transformation, namely to equip students with more advanced technical skills.
At the same time, he also urged the industry to provide opportunities for UTS students and lecturers to gain direct exposure through industrial training and placements at related companies.
"If our students are given the opportunity to undergo industrial training and lecturers gain work experience with these companies, they can bring back valuable knowledge and experience to share in the classroom," he said.
Khairuddin also expressed his appreciation to DronesKaki Sarawak for the collaboration, which he described as an important step in expanding the use of drone technology into real-world applications.
Also present were UTS Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr Mohammad Shahril Osman and Bertam View Manager Dalvin Chung Piaw Ching.
